Introductory Scuba Diving
Even if you’re a beginner, you can still explore the incredible underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef with our introductory scuba diving option. It’s fun, easy, and suitable for first-time divers. You don’t need any prior experience, and here’s how it works:
- You should be 12 or older and able to pass our on-board medical questionnaire.
- All equipment, including wetsuits and prescription masks if needed, is provided.
- Quicksilver’s highly qualified dive instructors, who are PADI certified, will guide you through the experience.
- The dive platform on our activity platform is specially designed for novice divers, ensuring a comfortable entry into the water.
- Before the dive, your instructor will brief you on basic dive skills.
- You’ll practice a few quick drills in the water, and ropes will be available to help control your descent.
- Each instructor takes a maximum of four introductory divers at a time.
- The introductory dive lasts for approximately half an hour.
- Afterwards, you’ll receive a certificate to commemorate your Great Barrier Reef dive, although you won’t be qualified to dive independently.
Certified Scuba Diving
For certified divers, the Great Barrier Reef offers a breathtaking experience. You can enjoy up to two dives, each lasting approximately 40 minutes. The visibility is excellent, and the variety of marine life is exceptional. Quicksilver’s professional instructors accompany all dives at no extra charge, ensuring safety and maximum enjoyment. If you’re a certified diver travelling with non-diving companions, they can participate in other platform activities, including introductory scuba diving.
- All equipment, including wetsuits and prescription masks if required, is included.
- Certified divers must possess an internationally recognised SCUBA certificate card.
Taking The Plunge: General Safety Information on Scuba Diving
Here’s some essential safety information to keep in mind:
- Some medical conditions may prevent you from diving, so consult your doctor if you’re concerned. The minimum age for all diving activities is 12 years old.
- Certified divers need to provide evidence of their dive certification and medical fitness.
- Introductory divers are subject to a medical questionnaire.
- If you plan to fly after diving, we recommend waiting at least 12 hours if you’ve done one dive and 24 hours if you’ve done more than one dive during the day.

Flying after Scuba Diving
For a single, non-decompression scuba dive, you should not fly or go to altitude for at least 18 hours after a scuba dive. You should not fly for 24 hours after your last dive. If you are skydiving or hot-air ballooning, you must wait 24 hours after diving. We recommend waiting a minimum of 24 hours whenever possible.
